Be'lakor Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Sure, we're currently writing new music for our fourth album. We're hoping to release it at some point in 2014, but this is not a hard deadline. We're not playing live much (if at all) as we prefer to focus on either new material or performance at any given time.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?
I think Of Breath and Bone is a bit faster, heavier and more melodic than our previous releases. The melodies and harmonies are also a bit more intricate. There is less of a 'doomy' feel and more aggression this time around.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?
Like our previous releases, most of our songs tell a story. These are usually allegorical and explore ideas we find interesting - the nature of life, death, existence and whether there is meaning in any of it.

4. I know that the band name came from a demon in a game, what was it that interested you about this diety to name a band after him?
Nothing at all, we chose the name because we liked its aesthetics and thought it rather unique, rather than the qualities of the original character.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
I think our stage performance is fairly average. We're not a band that enjoys, or is particularly skilled, at synchronising our movement or generating "energy" on stage. We like to focus on our music instead. Without a doubt, the most enjoyable shows have been at Summer Breeze in Germany and playing with our friends in Melbourne, Australia.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?
Absolutely, we'll most likely get back to Europe after we release our next album. We're also very keen on touring the US when the right opportunity arises.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of melodic death metal?
It's been excellent - I think there is a thirst out there for emotionally engaging melodic death metal and people seem to enjoy what we write. Our listeners have been very supportive over the years and make it easy for us to continue writing music.

8. The new album was released by Kolony Records, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support they have given you so far?
We've been working with Kolony Records since 2009 - they also released our second album,Stone's Reach. It's been a great experience - the label is professional, hard working, attentive and honest. We couldn't ask for anything more.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We will continue to refine our songwriting and try to produce music that keeps engaging people. We have set no boundaries to what we produce, except for the fact that it will always be death metal. Other than that, we're open to trying anything.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I've been listening to a lot of black metal - particularly Deathspell Omega and Blut Aus Nord. Despite the fact that people are always keen to attribute music, we rarely take direct influences from other bands. We're usually more influenced by the moods and emotion of other music, and often find bands from many different genres inspiring if they capture the right atmosphere.

11. How would you describe your views on Paganism?
Indifferent.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Reading, staying fit, all sorts of gaming.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Thank you for your time and questions, much appreciated.
