Corprophemia Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
Well, shortly after the album was recorded we ran into some issues with one of the original members, and unfortunately John Bellon (our drummer) was headed in a difference direction than the rest of the band. We parted on good terms and wished him the best in his future endeavours. We then started reaching out to some people to find a replacement, luckily for us we were in the right place at the right time and we were able to connect with Jason Longo (Blood of Christ, Mullet Corpse). He has been a welcome addition to the family and has brought a great deal of expertise to the group.
We have also been busy getting merch ready to go for our album release shows,  so make sure you stop out and see us on one of our dates to pick up the cd and some awesome merch.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
Well, as you know it has been a good deal of time since Corprophemia has released an album, and I think the most notable changes to our sound are that as musicians we have matured considerably, as a by product we have a much more refined sound musically. While some of the members have changed, the heart of the band remains the same. Frank has been the primary songwriter for the band since its inception, so the bands main direction and focus has stayed on point. The other notable difference is in the vocal stylings of Matt Kelly. He has really helped to change the sound of the band and bring a more modern feel to the band.

3.This is the first album to be released in 9 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?
Since the release of Arrived In Pieces the band went on a brief Hiatus. Frank was a pivotal part in a number of projects, notably Shinje where he started working in a band with Matt Kelly (who was playing guitar at the time), and the CDN Records Deathcore band Calculate (Matt’s first Foray into vocals).

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
The main lyrical topics of this album have to do with the birth of evil. This is where the title “Abhorrogenesis” comes from, the beginning of abhorrence. The lyrical content is about the evil that is inherent in all humans, and the dark and depraved things that people will do to each other. There is also some touching on the Satanic. Not that we believe in Satan, or God, as the members of the band mainly identify as atheists, but it touches on the Satanic because religion itself is such a burden to the people of this planet, and is such a hotbed of depravity in its own right.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Corprophemia'?
Corprophemia was a name that the original band sat down and came up with one alcohol fueled night. It was purely an epiphany that was created one long night watching vintage horror movies. This is just one of those things that was a happy accident.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
There have been so many awesome shows, with amazing bands. Anytime we ever played with Fuck the Facts, or Starring Janet Leigh were great times. Some other great bands like Dismata, Dear Black Diary, Blostomycosis, Deamon, Heaps of Dead, and obviously our most recent show at Ontario Death Fest 3.
Our stage performance in an unrelenting assault of pure Canadian Death metal. We try to stay as high energy as possible while bringing Death metal to the crowd at 300 bpm.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
For the new album we have a three show cd release coming focusing on our home town of Windsor, Oshawa and Toronto. These will be followed this summer by a slew of shows that we are currently in the process of booking. We are hoping to be touring the east coast of Canada this summer, with some U.S. dates later in the fall. Keep your eyes peeled for those.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of brutal and technical death metal?
Worldwide we have had great success with Arrived in Pieces. The current album is moving well, better than expected in fact. We have heard only good feedback about the current album so far, and we love any feedback we get as it helps us to improve as musicians when we know what the fans are looking for. We have sent albums to Japan, Poland, Germany, Italy, France, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, Russia, and many other places worldwide.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Well we are constantly evolving as a band, we will always be in the bounds of Death metal, but we will continue to push the boundaries of what we do as a band and as musicians.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
As a unit we have really been listening to a lot of different bands like: Deformatory, Gravitational Distortion, Human Compost, Screams of Deimos, Viledriver.  Vulvodynia, Archspire, Jasad, Cryptopsy, The Black Dahlia Murder, The Faceless, Death, Kataklysm, Modern Day Babylon, Periphery, Red Fang, Bong Ripper, Slab Dragger, Ghost, Sea Basterd, and way too many more.
As far as musical styles, that influenced the album, a lot of Bay Area Death Metal, Melo Death, Tech Death, Djent, you name it, and it has probably influenced us in some way on this album.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
I think everyone can agree on Cars and Motorcycles, aside from that we are mostly all old men (except for Mat), and mostly just do old men things. Like watch the news and yell at the neighbors kids.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Canadian Metal is putting out some of the best music we have ever heard. If you can’t find a new Canadian band you like then you aren’t looking. Get out there to some local shows and find some new bands to love.
